Flannery Plant Hire is a leading provider of plant hire and specialist attachments to the construction industry across the UK and Ireland. With a comprehensive fleet of innovative machinery, we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional customer service and meeting our clients' project requirements.
We’re creating a new Head of IT role to lead and mature our technology function. You will be the day-to-day lead for all IT matters, reporting to the Commercial & IT Director. This is a hands-on leadership position: you’ll set strategy, own delivery, manage suppliers, and roll up your sleeves to make sure systems and users are supported. You will drive continuous improvement, implement new systems and ways of working, and ensure compliance, security and reliability across the business.
What you’ll do
- Be the day-to-day IT lead for the business, visible and responsive to users and managers.
- Manage our MSP and key suppliers: support, infrastructure, licensing, SLAs and escalations.
- Oversee core systems (e.g., rental/ERP, finance, CRM, HR, telephony, telematics, M365/SharePoint/Teams/Intune) and keep them stable, secure and well used.
- Plan and deliver system changes and new tools from idea to go-live, with clear comms and training.
- Own IT service performance: ticket queues, first-time fix, user satisfaction and simple processes.
- Lead cyber security basics: identity/access, patching, backups, DR, awareness and incident response.
- Ensure GDPR/data protection compliance and support audits and remedial actions.
- Work with leaders across the business to spot problems, simplify processes and standardise where sensible.
- Manage budgets and licensing; get value from suppliers and avoid waste.
- Build and guide a small internal IT team over time (where needed), setting clear standards and coaching.
- Keep practical business continuity/DR plans tested and ready.
What you’ll bring
- Solid IT leadership in an SME/mid-market environment (team or function lead), comfortable being both strategic and hands-on.
- Proven experience managing an MSP/vendor ecosystem and holding them to account.
- Track record delivering business system changes or implementations and getting users on board.
- Good grasp of security and GDPR in a practical, proportionate way.
- Clear communicator who builds trust with directors, depot managers, workshop leads and field teams.
- Organised, steady under pressure, and willing to roll up your sleeves to get issues resolved.
- A clean UK driving licence and willingness to travel to depots/sites.
Nice to have
- Experience in construction, plant hire or rental operations.
- Familiarity with telematics/IoT, maintenance/field service systems and mobile/rugged devices.
- Comfortable with data and reporting (e.g., Power BI) and improving data quality.
- Interest or experience in automation/AI where it genuinely helps (Power Platform, Copilot, etc.).
Practicalities
- Reports to: Commercial & IT Director.
- Location: Wembley travel to depots/sites as required.
- Work pattern: On site, WFH one day per week once settled; occasional out-of-hours work for maintenance/incidents.
- Right to work in the UK required.
How to succeed in this role
- Lead with the business outcome first; choose pragmatic, scalable solutions.
- Be visible and approachable; build trust with teams across the organisation.
- Communicate simply, set clear expectations, and follow through.
- Measure what matters and use data to drive decisions and improvements.
